1886 Repunched Date WRPD-001

Description

This repunched date variety — attributed by the Wexler Team (Variety ID: 1886 $1 WRPD-001, cross-referenced as VAM-4) — occurs on the 1886 Liberty Head Gold Dollar, a Type 1 Liberty design struck at Philadelphia. It must not be confused with the identically designated WRPD-001 applied to the 1886 Morgan Dollar; these are entirely different coins of different denominations. On the gold dollar, repunching targets the 18 in the date: a strong bar is visible beneath the top serif of the 1, and a separation line appears at the bottom interior of the first 8. The companion doubled die WDDO-001 is present, showing a minor eyelid split and a thick ear lobe to the south. Obverse die cracks run from the neck base and from the throat east through the hair, and a die gouge sits inside the ear. The reverse shows a die crack on the bottom of the second leaf and a break on the knot's left side. The Type 1 Liberty Gold Dollar, designed by James B. Longacre, was struck from 1849 through 1854 in its original form; the 1886 date falls in a much later series continuation. Documented varieties on these small gold pieces attract specialist collectors with a solid multi-marker attribution profile.
