Description

Andrew Wojtowich discovered this variety in 2018, and it entered the VAM catalog as the 1886-O VAM-26 Morgan Dollar with classification 26 III2 18 - C3e from die pair 181. The defining obverse characteristic is a high date positioned at the left edge of the normal lateral range. A small die chip at the lower right outside of the ear serves as a reliable die marker for quick attribution. The C3e reverse die exhibits very fine, dense horizontal polishing lines concentrated in the lower and upper tail feather areas, evidence of die maintenance that left distinctive surface texture. This regular strike New Orleans issue shares die pair 181 with other recognized 1886-O varieties, allowing collectors to study die state progression across the family. The combination of the elevated date placement, ear die chip, and the reverse polishing lines provides a three-point attribution framework. As a relatively recent discovery, the VAM-26 may still be underrepresented in population reports.
