Error
Description
Identified by Jason Henrichsen in 2010, VAM-1D2 of the 1886-O Morgan dollar is designated III2 1 C3a and cataloged as Die Gouge Inside Ear, Clashed t, from die pair (181). The obverse is a clashed die showing a partial incuse letter t from TRUST on the reverse, visible in the right hair vee of the lower hair. This clash transfer is the primary attribution point on the obverse. The reverse carries a C3a die with a medium IV O mintmark set very slightly left of center, along with very slight doubling on the lower arrow shaft bottom. The 1886-O is one of the scarcer New Orleans Mint Morgan issues, and VAM-1D2 adds a clashed-die component that enhances its appeal to variety specialists. Die clashes on Morgan dollars occur when obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring design elements in incuse relief onto the opposing die.
