Discovered in 2015 by Mitch Hill, this 1885 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar variety is distinguished by an unusual thread-like die impression on the reverse — a curved, hair-thin line running across the third through fourth inner feathers and fifth through sixth outer feathers at the bottom of the eagle's left wing. Cataloged as VAM-1P with attribution III2 1 - C3a, the thread-like impression category carries a question mark (?), reflecting uncertainty about the mechanism that produced such a fine linear feature. Thread-like impressions differ from standard die scratches in their precise, consistent appearance, suggesting they may originate from foreign material trapped during hubbing or die finishing. This variety shares the exact obverse die with 1885-P VAM-26 Die 2, establishing a die lineage connection between the two listings. The 1885 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar was produced during the height of the series when the Bland-Allison Act mandated massive silver dollar production, often exceeding circulation demand and sending millions directly into Treasury vaults.
