Description

Martin Field discovered this variety in September 1979, documenting an 1885 Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar with prominent doubling on the 5 in the date. The numeral 5 shows doubling across its entire top outside edge, with the effect slightly stronger on the right half — a graduated intensity pattern indicating the hub displacement concentrated toward one side during die preparation. Classified as 13 (revised) III2 13 - C3a (Doubled 5) (189), the "revised" notation indicates this VAM entry was updated after its initial cataloging, reflecting the ongoing refinement that characterizes the VAM attribution system as researchers discover new information about previously documented varieties.
