1885 Indian Head Cent Die Clash (Reverse — Eye, Neck, and Chin)

Description

This 1885 Indian Head cent exhibits a die clash on the reverse where Liberty's eye, neck, and chin have been transferred onto the reverse die surface, along with portions of the feathers and headdress from the obverse design. The Indian Head cent, designed by James Barton Longacre and produced from 1859 through 1909, was struck in bronze consisting of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19 mm diameter and a plain edge. Philadelphia produced 11,765,384 Indian Head cents in 1885, a moderate mintage for the mid-1880s. A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies come together without a planchet between them, causing elements of each die's design to be impressed into the opposing die as incuse images. When coins are subsequently struck from these clashed dies, the transferred design elements appear as raised, ghost-like impressions in the fields or over the normal design. This particular clash is notable for exhibiting a broader range of facial features than the forehead-and-nose clash variety also documented for the 1885 date, suggesting either a different alignment angle between the dies during the clashing event or that this variety originates from an entirely different die pair. The visibility of Liberty's eye, neck, and chin in addition to the feather and headdress elements indicates the dies met with significant force and at an orientation that captured the lower portion of the obverse portrait onto the wreath side of the reverse.
