Showing both obverse and reverse clash impressions, this 1885 Indian Head Cent preserves the full portrait of Liberty clashed onto the reverse die along with the C from CENT visible in front of the eye on the obverse — the two classic diagnostic markers of die clashes on Indian Head Cents. A die clash occurs when the dies strike together without a planchet between them, and the incuse impression from one die transfers to the face of the other. The C-in-front-of-eye is the most widely recognized clash indicator on the series, resulting from the alignment of CENT on the reverse with the portrait's eye area. The full portrait on the reverse indicates a strong clash that transferred substantial obverse detail. The 1885 Indian Head Cent was struck in bronze at the Philadelphia Mint using James Longacre's design, which had been in continuous production since 1859. Die clashes on Gilded Age Indian Head Cents reflect production conditions where high-speed striking occasionally resulted in planchet feed failures, allowing the dies to contact each other directly.
