1884-O VAM-7A

Description

Discovered by Laurence Galbraith in July 2005, this New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar is designated VAM-7A under Classification III24, C3d, with die pair 181, documenting an O/O Tilted Left, Far Date, and Pitted Die ED. On the reverse, raised dots surround ED in UNITED from a rusted die, and the O mint mark is repunched with the original showing diagonally within the opening. The right wreath is doubled on the outside, and TATES OF AMERICA is doubled at the bottom. The raised dots from die rusting give this variety a distinctive texture around the affected letters, evidence that the die developed surface pitting before or during its production run. Struck in 90% silver at New Orleans, the 1884-O Morgan Dollar is one of the more available dates in the series, yet VAM-7A's combination of repunched mint mark, far date position, and rusted die pitting makes it a multi-diagnostic variety that rewards careful examination under magnification.
