1884-O VAM-23B

Description

Originally discovered by Mike Emswiler as VAM-23A in March 2004, this later die state was recategorized as VAM-23B in February 2014 and classified as 23B III2 9 - C3a (181). The 1884 New Orleans Morgan Dollar is designated Doubled 1-4, Clashed Obverse n and s, Die Break Cap Top. The obverse die (III2 9) shows clashed die transfer marks: a partial incuse n from In appears next to Liberty's neck, and a partial incuse s from Trust shows in the right hair vee of the lower hair edge. What distinguishes VAM-23B from earlier states is a die crack above the wheat leaves and across the Phrygian cap top, accompanied by a displaced field break above the cap — a structural failure where the die surface has shifted, pushing metal upward to create a raised shelf along the crack. This displaced field marks advanced die deterioration. The 1884-O had substantial mintage, and die breaks with displaced field formation represent the dramatic late-stage failures that collectors find visually compelling and that helped establish VAM collecting as a major subspecialty.
