1884-O Repunched Mintmark WRPM-008
Error
Description
Submitted by David Mulberry and attributed by the Wexler Team, WRPM-008 of the 1884-O Morgan dollar shows an O mintmark repunched to the southwest and west (O/O/O), indicating the mintmark punch was applied at least three times in slightly different positions. Obverse die markers include doubling at the top of the 1 in the date, which appears on several dies and is not unique to this variety. A die crack extends east from the right side of the bust to the 1 in the date, another runs west from the left side of the bust, and a short die crack extends south from the point of the bust. On the reverse, a north-south die scratch appears inside the lower area of the last S in STATES. Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #9, VAM #15, and Wexler Variety ID: 1884-O $1 WRPM-008. The triple-punched O mintmark with displacement in two directions makes this a particularly interesting repunched mintmark, as most RPMs show displacement in only one direction. The 1884-O Morgan dollar was struck at the New Orleans Mint, where hand-punched mintmarks frequently exhibit positional variation.
