1883-S VAM-8

Description

Discovered by Martin Field in May 1981, the 1883-S VAM-8 Morgan Dollar is classified as III2 7 · C3a (Doubled 8-3) with die pairing number 187. The obverse (III2 7) exhibits the first 8 doubled on the left inside of both loops and the 3 doubled at the bottom inside of the lower loop and at the ball of the lower loop, with the numeral 1 showing a die chip on its vertical shaft. These doubled date features were produced during the hubbing process when the working hub and working die were not perfectly aligned during successive impressions, creating subtle secondary images on the affected digits that serve as the primary variety diagnostics. The reverse (C3a) is classified as a normal die, though some specimens display a die chip in the wreath opposite the N in UNITED — a progressive die deterioration marker that develops over time and helps identify die state within the variety's production run. The 1883-S Morgan Dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint, composed of 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter. George T. Morgan designed the coin with Liberty in a Phrygian cap on the obverse and a heraldic eagle on the reverse. The 1883-S had a mintage of approximately 6.25 million pieces, lower than its Philadelphia and New Orleans counterparts for the year. The Gilded Age context of this coinage reflects the ongoing national debate over silver monetization policy, and the San Francisco Mint's role in processing western silver into legal tender. Examination of the doubled 8-3 is best performed under 7x to 10x magnification, focusing on the interior curves of the loops where the secondary impression creates subtle thickness differences.
