Discovered in 2015 by the researcher known as Tmanhg, the 1883-S VAM-1A "Die File Lines Obverse" Morgan dollar documents visible die file and polishing lines in the obverse fields of George T. Morgan's silver dollar design. Cataloged as 1A III2-1 - C3a (Die File Lines Obverse) with die number 187, this variety pairs an Obverse III 2 1 carrying the distinctive file lines with a normal C3a reverse die. San Francisco struck approximately 6.25 million Morgan dollars in 1883, a moderate mintage that places the date in the mid-range of S-mint Morgan dollar production. Die file lines result from the finishing process applied to working dies during preparation for the coining press — mint workers used fine files and polishing tools to smooth die surfaces, remove minor imperfections, and prepare the die for production. When this filing and polishing process left visible traces, the incuse lines in the die surface transferred as shallow raised lines on struck coins, creating a subtle but repeatable diagnostic that appears on every coin struck from that die.
