1883-P VAM-7A

Description

Discovered by C. Logan McKechnie in February 2009, this Philadelphia Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-7A with classification III2 7 and a C3a reverse under the title Doubled 18-3, Clashed Obverse n and s. The obverse displays date doubling across three digits: the 1 is doubled slightly at the top right outside of the vertical shaft, the first 8 is doubled at the top inside of the upper loop, and the 3 is doubled slightly at the bottom of the lower loop. Beyond the date doubling, this die shows evidence of a die clash with a partial incuse n from the word In on the reverse visible next to Liberty's neck and a faint partial incuse s from Trust appearing in the right hair vee of the lower hair edge. The reverse C3a die is described as normal. The combination of doubled date digits and clash transfer marks on a single obverse die creates a dual-attribution variety. The clash impressions of both the n and s from reverse lettering provide an additional layer of diagnostic evidence that distinguishes VAM-7A from related varieties in the 1883 Philadelphia Morgan dollar series.
