Error
Description
Discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974, VAM-6 of the 1883 Morgan dollar is designated III2 6 C3a as Low 3, Doubled 1-3, from die pair (180). The obverse features a distinctive low 3 set lower than the rest of the date, combined with doubling on the 1 and 3. The 1 shows doubling as a notch on the left side of the lower crossbar, while the 3 is doubled at the bottom inside of the lower loop. These two doubling points on separate digits provide multiple attribution markers. The reverse is a normal C3a die. Notably, this reverse die was later used to produce the 1883-P VAM-21.1, establishing a die-linkage connection valuable for researchers studying Philadelphia Mint emission sequences and die utilization patterns. The reuse of reverse dies across different obverse pairings was standard Mint practice, and identifying shared reverses helps reconstruct production order. Hinckley's discovery over five decades ago places VAM-6 among the earlier documented varieties in the 1883 Morgan dollar series.
