1883-P VAM-5

Description

Maurice Dubreuil discovered this 1883 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar variety in February 1975, making it one of the earlier documented VAMs for the date. Revised in 2013, VAM-5 is defined by doubled digits 1 through 3, a high-set right 8, and a possible misplaced date element — a faint trace of the left base of a 1 between the digits 1 and 8, suggesting a remnant from an abandoned hub impression. The left 8 shows doubling at the lower left inside and right outside of the upper loop, while the 3 carries secondary displacement. The high right 8, set noticeably above the baseline, indicates uneven vertical registration of the date logotype. Dubreuil's early 1975 discovery places this among the foundational VAM attributions cataloged during the initial decade of systematic Morgan Dollar variety research pioneered by Van Allen and Mallis. Philadelphia struck 12,291,000 Morgan Dollars in 1883, generating a substantial die population.
