1883-P VAM-24

Description

Documented in 2013, the 1883-P VAM-24 Morgan Dollar carries the classification III2 24 - C3a (Doubled 18-3, Scribbles Forehead) with die pairing number 188. The obverse (III2 24) displays subtle but diagnostically significant doubling: the numeral 1 is doubled on the right side of its vertical shaft, the left 8 shows doubling at the lower outside of the upper loop and top inside of the lower loop, and the 3 is doubled at the bottom inside of its lower loop. Beyond the date doubling, the obverse exhibits distinctive scribble lines on Liberty's forehead and back of jaw — evidence of a deliberate attempt by a Mint worker to erase small raised rust dots from the die surface. These rust dots form when moisture contacts the polished die face, causing oxidation that pits the steel and creates corresponding raised bumps on struck coins. The scribble-pattern polishing lines left by the corrective grinding are themselves diagnostic, as their random directional pattern differs from the systematic parallel lines produced by standard die maintenance procedures. The Morgan Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1883, designed by George T. Morgan with Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton on the obverse and a heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. Composed of 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter, the 1883-P had a mintage of approximately 12.3 million pieces. The coexistence of hubbing-origin date doubling with post-production die maintenance artifacts makes this variety an instructive example of how different die anomaly mechanisms can overlap on a single working die.
