1883-P VAM-17A

Description

Discovered by Michael Ash in June 2006, VAM-17A on the 1883 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar is cataloged as III2 17, C3a (Doubled 8-3, Clashed Obverse n) with die pair 189. The obverse (III2 17) shows a clashed die with a faint incuse "n" from "In" on the reverse transferred next to Liberty's neck, along with a slightly doubled top of the cap. The reverse (C3a) is a normal die. This variety was eliminated from the VAM-17 lineage in 2014 after researchers determined it came from a different die than VAM-17, and its association with any other listed die pairing is currently not known. George T. Morgan's 90% silver dollar entered its sixth year of production in 1883, and the Philadelphia Mint struck over 12 million examples, generating substantial die variety material. The combination of a clashed obverse and doubled date digits on a single die makes this an interesting attribution despite the delisted association, as die clashes from the reverse inscription transferring onto the obverse portrait remain among the most visually distinctive Morgan Dollar varieties.
