1883-P VAM-9

Description

Oscar Simpson discovered this Philadelphia Morgan dollar in May 1978, classified 9 III2 9 with a C3a reverse, designated Doubled 18-3, Stars and Motto. The obverse die shows three doubled date digits: the 1 at the bottom of the upper crossbar, base, and left side of the vertical shaft; the first 8 at the left inside of both loops and bottom outside of the lower loop; and the 3 slightly at the bottom inside of the lower loop. Beyond the date, all stars and motto letters are doubled next to the rim in a radial direction. The reverse C3a is a normal die. The radial pattern of star and motto doubling distinguishes this from varieties where doubling is confined to the date, reflecting a rotational component in the hub misalignment that affected peripheral elements more than central ones. The combination of three doubled digits and radial peripheral doubling makes VAM-9 one of the most extensively doubled 1883 Philadelphia varieties. 1883-P VAM-9 Doubled 18-3, Stars and Motto Discovered by Oscar Simpson, May 1978.
