Description
Designated VAM-2C2 with the classification III2 2 - C3b (Doubled 882, Lip Counter Clash Break, Break Cap Back) and die pairing number 177, this 1882-CC Morgan Dollar is a Hit List 40 variety — one of the 40 most sought-after and collectible VAMs across the entire Morgan Dollar series, a distinction that elevates its desirability and market value significantly above typical VAM varieties. Discovered in 2010, the obverse (III2 2) displays a small break at the back of the Phrygian cap resulting from die clashing, while the date shows doubling on the digits 882 — hub displacement that affected the final three digits of the date. The reverse (C3b) exhibits a double clash vee at the top of the right wreath — a V-shaped clash mark created when the dies struck each other without a planchet, with the double designation indicating two separate clash events contributed to the mark pattern. The reverse die is noted as rotated to approximately 7 degrees on some specimens, documenting a die alignment variation where the reverse die shifted from its intended position relative to the obverse during production. The Morgan Dollar was struck at the Carson City Mint in 1882, one of the most collected mint marks in all of American numismatics due to the Carson City facility's limited production years (1870-1893) and association with the Nevada silver mining industry. Composed of 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter, the 1882-CC is a date actively sought by Morgan Dollar collectors. George T. Morgan's design features Liberty in a Phrygian cap on the obverse and a heraldic eagle on the reverse. The Hit List 40 designation and the counter clash break at the cap back make VAM-2C2 a premium variety within the already-popular Carson City Morgan Dollar collecting specialty.
