Description

Martin Field discovered this San Francisco Morgan dollar in December 1978. Cataloged as VAM-27 under classification III2 14 with a C3a reverse, the variety is titled Doubled 18-1, S Tilted Left and carries a rarity rating of 185. On the obverse, the first 1 shows slight doubling at the top right of the shaft and at the top left and right of the bottom crossbar. The first 8 is doubled slightly at the top inside and strongly at the bottom outside of the lower loop, with a spike visible at the left inside of the upper loop. The second 1 exhibits slight doubling at the lower left side of the vertical shaft. The S mintmark is tilted to the left. The exact same reverse die produced three distinct varieties: 1881-S VAM-27, 1881-S VAM-39, and 1881-S VAM-80, each paired with a different obverse. This shared reverse creates a natural collecting set for specialists tracking individual die usage across multiple pairings. The strong doubling at the bottom outside of the first 8's lower loop provides the quickest screening point before examining the more subtle displacement on the two 1 digits. =1881-S VAM-27 Doubled 18-1= Discovered by Martin Field, December 1978.
