Error
Description
Discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974 and revised in 2011, VAM-9 on the 1881 Morgan Dollar is classified III2 9 · C3a, entry 180 — Doubled 18-1. Both 1s show doubling at the top; the left 8 shows strong doubling at the top outside of the upper loop and at the lower right inside both loops. Some examples carry a die chip between the left-8 loops, a secondary marker for die-state determination. Slightly doubled tops of the edge cotton bolls and two topmost cotton leaves accompany the date doubling. The reverse C3a shows polishing outlining below the right star and polishing roughness at the bottom of L, L, A, and R in DOLLAR. The 1881-P Morgan Dollar is a 90% silver Philadelphia Mint issue. The left-8 doubling is the strongest triage trigger under low magnification.
