1881-P VAM-35

Description

Discovered in 2022, this Philadelphia Morgan dollar is designated VAM-35 with classification II235 and a C3e reverse under the title Doubled 1-1, Tripled Right Reverse. The obverse displays subtle date doubling across both digits 1: the first 1 is doubled slightly on the top right of its vertical shaft, while the second 1 shows doubling on the lower left of its vertical shaft just above the crossbar. Both loops of the second 8 contain lumps of extra metal, further confirming hub irregularities during die production. Polishing lines in LIBERTY serve as the obverse die marker. The reverse C3e die exhibits slight tripling to quadrupling on the bottoms of the letters of AMERICA and on some outer right wreath leaves toward the rim, with light pitting on the eagle providing an additional reverse die marker. The combination of obverse doubling and reverse tripling-to-quadrupling places VAM-35 among the more complex multi-feature varieties in the 1881 Philadelphia Morgan series, where both sides of the coin carry independently interesting hub anomalies worthy of examination.
