Description

ELIMINATED as of March 2022, the 1881-P Morgan Dollar VAM-28 was determined to be a duplicate of VAM-14 in a late die state. Originally discovered by Brent Fogelberg in June 2014, this variety was classified as III2 28, die pair 180, with a C3a reverse (Doubled 18 and Ear). The obverse showed doubling on the 18, with the 1 doubled at the top right of the vertical shaft and the left 8 doubled at the top right outside of the upper loop. The right 1 displayed a surface break on the vertical shaft. Slight doubling was also noted at the right inside of the ear. The primary die marker was breaks on the 1 vertical shaft. Collectors should be aware that this designation is no longer valid—any coin matching these diagnostics should be attributed as VAM-14 in late die state rather than as VAM-28. This consolidation reflects the ongoing refinement of the VAM catalog as more die-state evidence becomes available.
