Description

Carrying the hallmark of a die clash, this 1881 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar — classified III21 with a C3a reverse — displays a faint partial incuse letter "n" next to Liberty's neck on the obverse. The incuse n comes from the reverse inscription "In" (of "In God We Trust"), transferred to the obverse die when the two dies struck each other without a planchet between them. Die clashes occur during normal press operation when the feeder mechanism fails to deliver a planchet, and the resulting die-to-die contact impresses reverse design elements into the obverse die. The clashed n beside Liberty's neck is a subtle but diagnostic feature distinguishing VAM-1E from the parent VAM-1 designation. A single vertical polishing line at the back of the jaw-neck junction serves as a secondary die marker for attribution. Discovered in 2011, this variety belongs to the extensive VAM-1 sub-family for the 1881-P date — where the base VAM-1 represents the normal die pairing and letter suffixes track progressive die states or additional features that emerged during the die's working life. The C3a reverse pairing links this die to the broader 1881-P die usage sequence.
