1881-CC VAM-6

Description

Bearing the coveted Carson City mintmark, this 1881-CC Morgan Dollar is attributed as VAM-6 (revised), discovered by Leroy Van Allen in December 1981 and revised in 2010, with die pair III23 and reverse C3b. The obverse shows a faint dash under the right 8 that wears away on late die states, along with doubling on the first 1 at the right side surface of the shaft and on the first 8 at the surface at top inside and bottom outside. A thin horizontal die impression line on the lower lip provides a persistent obverse die marker. The reverse features the CC mintmark centered but tilted slightly to the left, with a thin horizontal die scratch under the second tail feather from right serving as a reverse die marker. Carson City Morgan Dollars are among the most collectible issues in the entire series, produced at the Nevada mint that operated from 1870 to 1893 using silver from the Comstock Lode. The combination of the prestigious CC mintmark with Van Allen's doubled-date and tilted mintmark diagnostics makes this variety a meaningful find for specialists tracking Carson City die marriages.
