Description

Discovered in 2012, this San Francisco Morgan dollar earned the designation VAM-100 and is classified III2 53 with a C3k reverse under the formal title Doubled Date, Doubled Reverse. The obverse displays intricate date doubling across multiple digits: the 1 is doubled slightly at the top left and slightly tripled at the left top while also doubled at the right top of the lower crossbar; the left 8 shows doubling at the right inside of the lower loop; the right 8 is doubled at the lower left outside of the lower loop; and the 0 exhibits doubling at the lower left outside. A long vertical pair of segmented double die scratches at the right side of the lower cotton leaf serves as the obverse die marker. The reverse C3k die shows faint fine vertical polishing lines across the fields, consistent with die preparation. The combination of doubled date digits and a doubled reverse classifies this as a dual-feature variety, giving collectors two distinct attribution points on a single coin. San Francisco Morgan dollars from 1880 are among the more available dates, but multi-feature VAM varieties like this one carry added appeal.
