Description

Discovered by Charles Wallace in June 1966, the 1880-O VAM-8 "High O" Morgan dollar is one of the early foundational varieties cataloged during the formative years of the Van Allen-Mallis classification system. Cataloged as 8 III2 1 · C3d (High O) with catalog number 176, this variety's defining characteristic is a mintmark set higher than the standard position on the reverse — a placement anomaly that resulted from the hand-punching technique used to add the O mintmark to each individual working die. New Orleans struck approximately 5.31 million Morgan dollars in 1880, a date within the early production years of George T. Morgan's design that spans 1878 through 1921. An additional note indicates that the micro O mintmark appears to be set slightly to the left as well, compounding the positional anomaly with a lateral displacement that further distinguishes this die from the standard mintmark placement. The "micro O" descriptor refers to a smaller-than-typical O mintmark punch that was used on certain New Orleans Morgan dollar dies — the Mint maintained multiple mintmark punches of varying sizes, and the choice of punch contributes an additional classification layer to the VAM system. The III2 obverse die classification paired with the C3d reverse places this marriage within a specific die lineage, while Charles Wallace's early discovery date situates this variety among the first generation of VAM attributions that established the framework for all subsequent Morgan dollar variety research.
