Description
RENUMBERED — this variety became 1880-O VAM-2B, which carries a medium II O mint mark with a C3b reverse. Under its original VAM-1C classification (III2 1 - C3a), the obverse displays clashed die characteristics: a faint partial incuse curve of the lowercase n from "In" on the reverse appears next to Liberty's neck, transferred during a planchet-free die clash. The reverse shows the corresponding raised designer's initial M from the obverse above the lowercase d in "God" — the reciprocal clash mark confirming both dies struck each other. These clash marks represent a later die state of VAM-1, indicating progressive deterioration during the production run. Classified with an R-5 rarity rating. Struck in 90% silver at the New Orleans Mint, which operated from 1838 to 1909, the 1880-O is part of a complex VAM family with numerous die varieties reflecting the multiple die pairs employed during production. Collectors encountering specimens matching this description should attribute them under the current VAM-2B designation rather than the retired VAM-1C number.
