Description
This 1880 Indian Head Cent shows a die clash on the reverse characterized by a focused transfer of the obverse portrait's nose and forehead beneath and through the letter C in CENT, with the feathers from the headdress also clashed inside the right wreath area. The attribution notes establish that this clash originates from a different die pair than both the typical die clash (TDC-1C-1880-01) cataloged for this year and the full-portrait die clash also known for this date, identifying this as a third distinct 1880 die clash variety with its own unique transfer pattern. The more focused transfer beneath the C — concentrating on the nose and forehead rather than the broader facial profile — suggests either a slightly different rotational alignment between the dies at the moment of clash, or a different stage of die wear that allowed certain features to transfer more prominently than others. The presence of headdress feathers clashed inside the right wreath adds additional visual interest, as the linear feather elements create parallel lines within the organic wreath leaf pattern. James B. Longacre designed the Indian Head Cent with a bold, high-relief portrait of Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress on the obverse, and an oak wreath with shield on the reverse. The 1880 Indian Head Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The 1880 mintage of approximately 38.9 million pieces produced a substantial die population, and the existence of at least three distinct die clash varieties for this single date illustrates how common die clash events were during high-volume nineteenth-century production, when each die pair might produce tens of thousands of coins before retirement.
