Description
Among die clash varieties on Indian Head Cents, this 1880 example stands out for the completeness of the transferred design — the full front portrait of the Indian (actually Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress) is clashed onto the reverse die surface, producing an unusually comprehensive transferred image. Additionally, feathers from Liberty's headdress appear clashed inside the right wreath, extending the transferred design well beyond the typical single-element clashes more commonly encountered on Indian Head Cents. A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without an intervening planchet, and the force of this metal-on-metal impact transfers raised design elements from each die as incuse impressions into the opposing die face. Those transferred impressions then appear as raised features on every subsequent coin struck from the affected dies. This particular clash is documented as originating from a different die pair than the typical die clash cataloged as TDC-1C-1880-01 for this year, confirming that at least two separate die pairs experienced clash events during 1880 Indian Head Cent production at the Philadelphia Mint. The Indian Head Cent was designed by James Barton Longacre and struck in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm. The 1880 mintage was approximately 38.9 million pieces, a substantial production run. The full-portrait transfer distinguishes this clash from more typical examples where only the letter C from CENT appears on the obverse — here the complete facial profile, including the headdress feathers penetrating into the wreath area, creates a dramatically more extensive clash pattern that documents an exceptionally forceful die-to-die impact.
