1879-CC VAM-2A

Description

Discovered by Larry Briggs in November 2001, the 1879-CC VAM-2A is a later die state of 1879-CC VAM-2, classified III2 2 / C3b in the Van Allen-Mallis system and titled "Doubled 8, CC Tilted Left, Die Chip Stars." The 1879-CC Morgan dollar is among the most coveted Carson City issues — the facility's low mintages and remote Nevada location imbue every CC-mint coin with strong collector appeal, making die varieties particularly prized by specialists. On the obverse, an unusual constellation of die chips appears between the 1 and stars 3-7 on the left side, to the left of the 1, adjacent to the left dot, and in the LUR-BU area. On the reverse, the CC mintmark is shifted leftward and tilted strongly to the left — the defining C3b characteristic and the most immediately accessible diagnostic. On some specimens, the bottom of the G in GOD is partially filled, providing an additional confirmation point. The 90% silver 1879-CC Morgan dollar carries prestige beyond its variety status; Carson City collector demand remains consistently strong across all grade levels, and VAM-2A documents a distinct late-die-state moment in the life of this pairing.
