1878-P VAM-31 Lines Through Leg Discovered by Bob Yauger, November 1964. 31 II/I 8 B/Ab (Lines Through Leg) (177) Obverse II/I 8 - Type II LIBERTY; doubled P on left and tripled S at top right; partially broken bottom serifs of N and M in UNUM. Doubled 2, 3, 6, and 7 stars on left and 1, 3, 4, and 5th stars on right. 1 and 7 in date doubled at top right. Reverse B/Ab - Extra set of legs and talons on the right; design remains in leaves of branch and above branch on right; polishing scratches across arrow feathers and eagle's right talon, and also across bow in wreath. Possible faint tail feathers between 1 and 2TF. Die chips around R in TRUST. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: The VAM-31 is considered part of the 7/8 tail feather set, as a 7/0 reverse type. Although no tail feathers show, there is extensive doubling and die polishing around the eagles legs, conclusive evidence of the conversion from an 8TF reverse die. One of six known listings with a Broken N and M of UNUM, the others being 1878-P VAM-40, 1878-P VAM-110, 1878-P VAM-145, 1878-P VAM-162 and 1878-P VAM-200. The VAM-31 is recognized by PCGS. VAMs 31, 40 and 110 share an obverse. VAMs 145 and 162 share another. The VAM 200 obverse is its only use.
