Description

Listed under the Reverse of 1878 parent, the 1878-P Morgan Dollar VAM-18A is the clashed version of VAM-18, discovered by C. Logan McKechnie in October 2004. Classified as II/I 2, A2/A1a, die pair 180 (Doubled Date, Clashed Obverse n), this variety shares the same die characteristics as the Reverse of 1879 listing but is cataloged separately due to the parent classification. The obverse displays a faint partial incuse lowercase n from the reverse word IN next to Liberty's neck, created during a die clash event. Since 1878 dates were part of the master die, no variation in date position exists across different die pairs from this year, eliminating date placement as a diagnostic tool. The Reverse of 1878 parent distinguishes this from the Reverse of 1879 listing, and collectors should verify which reverse type their specimen carries before attributing.
