Description

1878-P VAM-16 Doubled LIBERTY Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1965. 16 II/I 4 - A1f (Doubled Liberty) (179) Obverse II/I 4 - Doubled LIBERTY shifted left. First four stars on left tripled with rest of stars on left and right doubled, some with large shifts. 1 and 7 in date doubled with 1 doubled ob both sides of shaft and 7 doubled at top and left side of crossbar. Some have a spike of metal between loops of first 8 on left side. Reverse A1f - Doubled lower and left wreath, all of legend, and stars. Three small feathers added on eagle's right and two on eagle's left side between leg and bottom of wing. Eagle's right leg and right wing doubled on outside. Olive branch leaves are doubled on outside. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: The 1878 VAM-16 is an 8 Tailfeather Morgan w/ the A1f reverse. Type II/I Obverse shows strong doubling on many features including LIBERTY and spectacular tripling on the first four stars to the left of the date due to rehubbing of a second design type over at least one other. The A1f Reverse has three extra feathers added to the base of the eagle's right wing. There is also a large pointed feather that is an easily recognized diagnostic. The A1f reverse is shared by the 1878-P VAM-12, 1878-P VAM-16, and 1878-P VAM-17.
