1878-P VAM-10A Discovery Brian Raines 2013 10A I28 A1e (Doubled Motto, Polishing Lines Lower Reverse) (180) Obverse I28 - First six stars on left doubled on left and right sides. E PLURIB doubled on left side and at bottom. Doubled date with 1 doubled at top left, above bottom crossbar and on right side of vertical shaft. First 8 doubled at bottom left inside of lower loop and right outside of both loops. 7 doubled on right side of vertical shaft and top left serif. Second 8 doubled slightly at bottom inside and upper left outside of lower loop. Reverse A1e - Doubled left inside including legend, wreath, and wing tip. Two small feathers added on eagle's right and left side between leg and bottom of wing. Slightly concave reverse. Later die state shows numerous fine random polishing lines at lower reverse with concentration at UNIT, left star and above ONE. Four lines radiating from lower point of left star and denticle point below E in ONE. (BSR comment-Too precise and well placed to be random.) DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: LVA Comments: Per Leroy's letter 8-29-13: Reverse A1e - Later die state shows numerous fine random polishing lines at lower reverse with concentration at UNIT, left start and above ONE. Four lines radiating from lower point of left star and denticle point below E in ONE. Comments: This is the late die state of the VAM-10. Earlier die states exhibit some more modest lines on the reverse. Due to the discovery of this die stage, the apparent emission sequence is VAM 15, 10, 10A. The 8TF Attribution Guide lists (incorrectly) the 1878-P VAM-10 as being struck first.
