Description

The 1878-P Morgan Dollar VAM-42A struck on the Reverse of 1879 shares the 7TF, Clashed Obverse In & st attribution and Super CD designation with its Reverse of 1878 sibling, but is identified specifically by the 1879-style reverse die. Discovered by Mark Kimpton in May 2003, this obverse die carries a strongly clashed impression with a full incuse n and partial I from "In," plus a partial st from "Trust" — all from the reverse motto transferred during the clash event. The Super CD designation marks this as one of the most forcefully clashed obverse dies in the 1878-P sequence. The Reverse of 1879 is the redesigned reverse featuring refined tail feathers and other detail changes that became standard for the series beginning in 1879; its presence on a 1878-P Morgan Dollar places this VAM-42A in the late transitional production run. Collectors attributing between the two VAM-42A parents should confirm reverse die style alongside the obverse clash impressions. The 90% silver Morgan Dollar was first struck in 1878, with 1921 dates part of the master die.
