Description

The 1878-P Morgan Dollar VAM-42A — struck on the Reverse of 1878 — carries the designation 7TF, Clashed Obverse In & st and holds the Super CD (Super Clashed Dies) designation, one of the highest-recognition classifications in Morgan Dollar VAM collecting. Discovered by Mark Kimpton in May 2003, this variety is defined by a strongly clashed obverse die showing a full incuse n and partial I from "In" of the motto, along with a partial incuse st from "Trust" — the combined impressions of both words transferred during the clashing event. The Super CD designation reflects the strength and completeness of the clash impressions, which are among the most dramatic in the 1878-P series. The Reverse of 1878 is the seven-tail-feather reverse used on the majority of 1878-P Morgan Dollars struck before the tail-feather redesign, making this the more prevalent reverse die for the 1878 Philadelphia issue. At 7TF, this VAM belongs to the standard reverse of the date. The 90% silver Morgan Dollar was introduced in 1878, with 1921 dates incorporated into the master die rather than punched per die.
