About This Coin
Produced at the Philadelphia Mint in the final Reconstruction Era year, these 1869 dollar pieces represent the culmination of four years of intensive design exploration for the silver dollar. The Seated Liberty dollar had been struck primarily for export trade during the 1860s, and the patterns tested whether the denomination might be revitalized through design modernization or compositional innovation. The obverse features experimental post-war designs, while the reverse tested compositions including nickel and aluminum alongside silver. A notable auction result of $37K in PR65 at American Numismatic Rarities reflects strong demand. The 1869 dollar patterns carry particular significance as they precede by just four years the Coinage Act of 1873, which discontinued the standard silver dollar in the controversial "Crime of '73." Some designs may have influenced the Trade Dollar concept emerging in the 1870s, as officials explored whether a heavier dollar might serve American interests in Asian markets. These patterns document the final Reconstruction proposals for a denomination that became the most politically contentious coin in American history during the free silver movement.
