About This Coin

Produced at the Philadelphia Mint in the inaugural year of the Reconstruction Era pattern program, these 1866 cent pieces tested post-Civil War design concepts for America's most ubiquitous denomination during sweeping monetary reform. The Indian Head cent had served since 1859, but wartime introduction of paper fractional currency and temporary disappearance of copper cents prompted exploration of whether the denomination's design and composition needed updating. The obverse features experimental post-war designs, while the reverse tested compositions including nickel and aluminum. A notable auction result of $9.6K in PR65+BN at Heritage Auctions confirms collector appreciation. The cent occupied a unique position in 1866: it was the one denomination that had actually continued circulating during much of the war (unlike hoarded silver and gold coins), yet remained a candidate for reform. These patterns reflect the ambitious scope of the 1866-1869 program, which left no denomination unexamined, and some experimental compositions tested in 1866 anticipated the eventual cent alloy changes that would define the denomination for the next century.
