Description
This 1868 Indian Head Cent exhibits a remarkably complete die clash affecting both the obverse and reverse. A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring each die's design in relief to the opposing surface. On the obverse, the C from CENT has transferred in front of the Indian's head, visible as a curved incuse impression in the coin's field at that location. On the reverse, the full face profile of the Indian head and a portion of the feather headdress have transferred onto the reverse die, producing a ghost impression of the obverse portrait across the reverse field β an unusually complete and legible transfer that indicates a particularly forceful clash event. The 1868 Indian Head Cent had a mintage of approximately 10.3 million pieces, all struck at Philadelphia in copper-nickel composition. Strong full-profile transfers of this completeness are uncommon in the Indian Head series; most clash events produce partial or indistinct impressions. This example's extensive design transfer on both sides places it among the more visually compelling die clash specimens from this era of U.S. coinage.
