Description
This 1868 Indian Head Cent exhibits a die clash on the obverse where the letter C from the word CENT on the reverse die has been transferred to the obverse, appearing in front of the Indian head portrait of Liberty. A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, and the force of impact transfers raised design elements from one die as incuse impressions into the opposing die face — these transferred impressions then appear as raised features on subsequently struck coins. The C from CENT is among the most commonly observed clashed elements on Indian Head Cents because its position on the reverse die aligns directly with the open field area in front of Liberty's face on the obverse die, creating a clear transferred impression in an uncluttered area where it is easily visible. The 1868 Indian Head Cent was designed by James Barton Longacre and struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of approximately 10.3 million pieces, continuing the lower-mintage trend of the late 1860s when cent production had not yet reached the high volumes of later decades. The coin was struck in copper-nickel composition (88% copper, 12% nickel) weighing 4.67 grams with a diameter of 19.0 mm — the copper-nickel formulation used from 1860 through 1864 was replaced by bronze in 1864, but the 1868 date falls within the post-1864 bronze era (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at 3.11 grams. Die clashes on Indian Head Cents from the Reconstruction era are sought by error collectors as examples of 19th-century Mint production processes where manual die alignment and mechanical press operations created opportunities for die-to-die contact during normal striking operations.
