The Cuds on Coins attribution service has cataloged at least nine retained cuds for this single date — an extraordinary concentration that underscores the metallurgical challenges the United States Mint faced when introducing the 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy in 1866. James B. Longacre's Shield nickel represented the nation's first venture into mass-produced nickel coinage, and the alloy's hardness required striking pressures that pushed contemporary die steel beyond its design limits. Retained cuds occur when a portion of the die rim fractures under repeated striking stress, creating a crack that allows the broken section to sink slightly below the surrounding die face while remaining physically attached. Each subsequent strike produces coins with a raised, slightly flattened area at the corresponding rim location — a shelf of displaced metal that retains partial design detail but lacks the full sharpness of the adjacent, unfractured areas.
