1866 Atypical Die Clash ADC-3C-1866-01
Error
Description
Preserving at least seven staggered clash events on the obverse die, this atypical die clash on an 1866 Nickel Three Cent Piece documents an extraordinarily complex clash sequence from the early Reconstruction era. An atypical die clash differs from a standard clash in that the dies come together at an unusual angle, with rotation, or with multiple impacts, producing clash marks that do not match the expected mirror-image pattern of a simple head-on collision. Seven distinct staggered clash impressions indicate the dies struck each other repeatedly at slightly different positions, building up a complex overlay of transferred design elements. The Nickel Three Cent Piece, introduced in 1865 to redeem the fractional currency notes issued during the Civil War, featured James Longacre's Liberty Head design. The 1866 issue was struck at Philadelphia during Reconstruction, when the nation was rebuilding after the Civil War and the Mint was producing these small-denomination coins to help restore normal commerce. Cataloged by MadDieClashes under ADC-3C-1866-01, the "ADC" prefix designates the atypical die clash classification. Multiple staggered clashes on a single die from this early date are exceptionally rare in the numismatic record and provide insight into the quality control practices at the Philadelphia Mint during the 1860s.
