Description
Judd-409a is a proof two-cent pattern struck in an experimental alloy, one of the compositional sub-variants in the J-409 series that tested the two-cent coin format in non-standard metals. The two-cent piece, introduced in 1864 as the first U.S. coin to bear IN GOD WE TRUST, was barely a year old when these 1865 trials were produced; Mint officials continued exploring alloy alternatives during the post-Civil War period to optimize coinage economics as the nation rebuilt its metallic currency supply. The proof quality of J-409a indicates these pieces were prepared for official inspection or collector presentation rather than to test mechanical coining properties. Approximately five to eight examples survive.
