RCD-2c-1865-09R Retained Cud

Description

Appearing on the Fancy 5 variety of the 1865 Two Cent Piece, this retained cud documents a die rim fracture where the broken fragment remained attached to the die rather than separating completely. Unlike a full cud — where the separated piece leaves a void that fills with metal to produce a smooth raised mass — a retained cud shows the fracture line while the design detail within the affected area remains partially or fully intact, since the broken section stayed in place during striking. The reverse die crack runs from the rim to the letter E in STATES, visible along the path marked in reference images. The 1865 Two Cent Piece comes in two recognized varieties distinguished by the style of the numeral 5 in the date: Fancy 5 and Plain 5. This retained cud appears on the Fancy 5 parent, pairing a die variety with one of the two date logotypes used that year. The Two Cent Piece, introduced in 1864 during the Civil War coin shortage, was the first U.S. coin to bear the motto IN GOD WE TRUST.
