1863 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-1863-01

Description

Struck during the Civil War, this 1863 Indian Head Cent bears marks of multiple atypical die clash events on both sides — collisions between obverse and reverse dies without a planchet between them that transferred design elements from each die onto the other. On the obverse, portions of the wreath clashed into the field in front of the neck and face of the Indian Head portrait. On the reverse, wreath segments and portions of the portrait transferred into the legend area, with a notable clash impression of the ear visible between the N and E of ONE. Atypical die clashes differ from normal clashes in severity: where a standard clash might leave faint ghost impressions, an atypical clash transfers enough material to produce clearly visible design elements from the opposing die. Cataloged as ADC-1C-1863-01 by MadDieClashes, the variety documents multiple clash events, suggesting the dies collided more than once before the error was detected. The 1863 Indian Head Cent was struck at Philadelphia during wartime coin hoarding that stripped copper-nickel cents from circulation, and production pressures of the era may have contributed to conditions that allowed repeated clashes.
