Description
Part of the Civil War Patterns (1860-1865) series, the 1863 Cent Pattern - J-299 is a cent from the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse features experimental designs reflecting wartime themes including patriotic motifs and alternative compositions and the reverse displays various experimental designs. Produced during the Civil War, when coin hoarding caused severe shortages and the Mint experimented with new compositions to keep coins in circulation. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Auction record: $2,300 PR66 01-01-2009 Heritage Auctions. Struck in bronze.
