Description
This gold medal, cataloged as Julian PR-28 and Baker-224, pairs portraits of George Washington and Andrew Jackson, produced circa 1862. The Washington-Jackson combination reflects the political tradition linking the two presidents as champions of popular democracy and strong executive leadership. The medal was produced at or through the United States Mint, as indicated by the Julian PR (Presidential) catalog designation, which covers Mint-produced presidential medals and related issues. Gold examples of this medal are exceptionally rare, as the precious metal composition limited production to a very small number of specimens, produced as special presentations or for wealthy collectors. The obverse features Washington in the established Mint portrait tradition, while the reverse presents Jackson in his characteristic military bearing. The circa 1862 date places this medal during the Civil War, when the pairing of the first president with the hero of New Orleans and staunch unionist who had faced down South Carolina's nullification crisis in 1832 carried powerful political symbolism. Jackson's famous declaration "The Union must and shall be preserved" resonated deeply during the secession crisis.
Rarity Notes
Extremely rare in gold. Very few gold examples are known. This is among the most valuable pieces in the Washington-Jackson medal series. Auction appearances are exceptional events.
