Description
This brass medal cataloged as GW-284 was produced circa 1860 by George Hampden Lovett (G.H.L.) and depicts Washington's Tappan headquarters in an equestrian composition. The "G.H.L." attribution identifies George Hampden Lovett, one of the most prolific private medal makers in American numismatic history, whose New York workshop produced hundreds of historical, patriotic, and commemorative medals from the 1850s through the 1880s. Washington's headquarters at the DeWint House in Tappan, New York, was used during two critical periods of the war: in 1780 during the trial and execution of British spy Major John Andre, and in 1783 during final peace negotiations. Lovett's historical medal series documented Revolutionary War sites throughout the Northeast, combining careful research with skilled die engraving. The brass composition and equestrian format made this an attractive and affordable addition to Washington medal collections. Lovett's Washington headquarters series is among the most comprehensive medallic surveys of Revolutionary War sites ever produced.
