Description
This brass medal cataloged as GW-496, struck from the second obverse die, depicts Washington's headquarters "No. 9 Dobbs Ferry," produced circa 1862. Dobbs Ferry, New York, located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River in Westchester County, served as an important staging point and headquarters location during the later years of the Revolution. The village was strategically positioned for monitoring British-held New York City and coordinating with French forces under the Comte de Rochambeau. In 1781, Washington and Rochambeau met at Dobbs Ferry to plan the campaign that would culminate in the decisive victory at Yorktown. The Dobbs Ferry headquarters thus marks a turning point in the war, when the Franco-American alliance shifted from defensive operations to the offensive strategy that ended British rule in America. This medal places that pivotal planning location within the numbered headquarters series, connecting Dobbs Ferry to the broader narrative of Washington's wartime command.
